Bringing The Canadian National Exhibition To The 21st Century
Overview
Legacy brands face a unique challenge - They must evolve without losing the trust they've spent decades earning.
For its centennial edition, the Canadian Nation Exhibition set out to transform a longstanding member publication into a sophisticated, contemporary editorial experience without losing the authenticity and trust built over generations.
As a creative strategy and editorial consultant, I shaped the publication’s vision, content strategy, and scalable design system across 100+ pages, creating a cohesive brand experience that honored the organization’s history while positioning it for the future.
The Challenge
For generations, the CNE's publications had served as historical records for members and longtime supporters. The centennial edition introduced a new challenge with leadership envisioning a publication with the sophistication of a lifestyle magazine while maintaining the authenticity and credibility expected by its loyal readership. To accomodate this, the publication needed to expand in scope, doubling in size, featuring over ten articles covering historical milestones, and centering organizational achievements.

The challenge was not simply designing for more content, but creating a cohesive experience that celebrated the past while positioning the CNE for the future.
My role was to act as a consultant for the creative strategy and editorial direction of the publication, partnering closely with executive stakeholders throughout the project.
Defining the creative vision for the centennial publication.
Developing a content strategy that balanced historical storytelling with a contemporary editorial experience.
Creating a scalable editorial system for more than 100 pages of content.
Establishing design standards for typography, layouts, visual hierarchy, and pacing.
Collaborating with stakeholders through iterative review cycles to ensure historical accuracy while maintaining creative consistency.
Using provided photography and written content to inform the visual direction of each feature while preserving a unified brand identity throughout the publication.
Approach
Rather than treating the publication as a collection of independent articles, I approached it as a curated brand experience. Every editorial decision was guided by one question: How can the publication feel both timeless and contemporary?
To answer this, I developed a modular editorial system that provided consistency without sacrificing the individuality of each story.
Photography became the primary visual anchor for each feature, influencing layout composition, pacing, and supporting graphic elements.
Typography and page architecture established continuity throughout the publication, allowing readers to move naturally between historical narratives while maintaining a premium reading experience.

Because the publication represented a milestone celebration, maintaining stakeholder confidence was just as important as the creative execution. Throughout the project, I established a collaborative review process that encouraged continuous feedback and ensured every design decision reflected the organization's vision. By combining strategic consultation with iterative design, I helped build consensus across leadership while preserving the integrity of the creative direction. This partnership allowed the publication to evolve without losing the familiarity that longtime readers valued.
The result was a publication that felt less like an annual report and more like a collectible editorial piece worthy of the occasion.
Business Impact
The centennial publication successfully modernized the CNE's editorial identity while honoring more than a century of organizational history.
Elevated Brand Perception: Supported Megan Mallen's participation at the AI & Tech Sandbox alongside leaders from organizations including Snapchat, DoorDash, and Pacsun.
Strong Stakeholder Alignment: An iterative creative process fostered trust across executive leadership, resulting in a final publication that balanced historical authenticity with contemporary design.
Expanded Audience Appeal: Created a unified visual language across social media, editorial content, website experiences, and executive communications, ensuring a cohesive presence throughout the event lifecycle.
By combining content strategy, editorial systems, and collaborative creative leadership, I helped transform a commemorative publication into a branded experience that honored the past while inviting new audiences into the story.
